Michigan LCV to Schuette, Snyder: Line 5 tunnel unacceptable, threatens Great Lakes

LANSING – Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement denouncing a proposal to replace Line 5 with a new tunneled pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac. Attorney General Schuette signaled his support for building a tunnel under the Straits at a GOP gubernatorial debate in Grand Rapids last Wednesday.

“It seems that Attorney General Schuette and Governor Snyder both have tunnel vision, steadfast on keeping oil flowing under the Straits of Mackinac at whatever cost,” said Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director of Michigan LCV. “Oil pipelines do not belong in our Great Lakes, period. Replacing the damaged Line 5 pipeline with a new tunneled pipeline is simply more of the same dangerous infrastructure that imperils our Great Lakes economy and our way of life.”

“Fifty years from now, do we want our grandchildren facing this same predicament of an aging, damaged pipeline in our Great Lakes?” added Wozniak.
