Michigan LCV statement on request for legal review of Line 5 tunnel legislation

LANSING – Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement regarding Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request for a legal opinion from Attorney General Dana Nessel on the constitutionality of Line 5 tunnel legislation passed during Lame Duck.

“During her campaign, Gov. Whitmer was an unabashed champion for our Great Lakes, pledging to begin the process of decommissioning the dangerous Line 5 oil pipeline on day one, and that’s exactly what she did today,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of Michigan LCV. “PA 359 was a backroom deal brokered by former Gov. Snyder and Enbridge Energy to keep oil flowing through our Great Lakes despite the well-documented risks and widespread opposition from Michigan residents, businesses and experts. We applaud Gov. Whitmer for taking the first step toward protecting our Great Lakes from a catastrophic oil spill.”
