Michigan LCV Statement on Patrick Lyoya prosecution decision

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement following the Kent County Prosecutor’s decision to prosecute Chris Schurr, the officer who killed Patrick Lyoya, an unarmed Black man, during a traffic stop in Grand Rapids in April.

“Today’s decision to prosecute should serve as a reminder that no one is above the law, and that it is critical to hold law enforcement accountable for the killing of unarmed Black people. Systemic racism continues to be an egregious public health crisis, and as an organization that works to protect the health of all Michiganders, we are committed to working toward a solution and fighting racism in all its forms.”
