Michigan LCV statement on Gov. signing Natural Resources Trust Fund legislation into law

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement after Governor Rick Snyder signed Senate Bill 551 into law. The legislation gives lawmakers more power over parks and conservation projects funded under the Natural Resources Trust Fund.  The Trust Fund was specifically set up by a vote of the people to be independent from the politics of the moment.

“We are disappointed Governor Snyder signed SB 551, which adds an unnecessary, political process to the Natural Resource Trust Fund, the key source of funding for projects that preserve outdoor recreation,” said Bob Allison, deputy director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “The Natural Resources Trust Fund is essential to preserving and protecting our Great Lakes, rivers, streams and enhancing outdoor recreation. This voter-approved fund was created to be independent from politics of the moment, and this legislation does just the opposite, giving politicians unnecessary influence over what parks and projects receive funding.”
