Michigan LCV opposes new Line 5 tunnel plan
LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today issued the following statement reaffirming opposition to Senate Bill 1197, legislation that was recently modified to create a new government authority to oversee a proposed tunnel to replace Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac. The legislation is being jammed through by Republican lawmakers and Gov. Rick Snyder after their original plan to require the Mackinac Bridge Authority to oversee the proposed oil tunnel received widespread backlash from the public as well as current and former Bridge Authority members.
“We remain opposed to Senate Bill 1197, which would keep the damaged Line 5 Pipeline in operation for another decade or more, prolonging the risk of a disastrous oil spill in our Great Lakes,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director at Michigan LCV. “Creating a new authority to oversee the pipeline does not change the fact that our most precious natural resource will remain at risk. We urge lawmakers in the House to stand up for our Great Lakes and reject this 11th hour attempt to keep oil pumping in our Great Lakes.”
