Governor Whitmer signed Executive Order 2023-5 in early December to order all state agencies using or operating state owned vehicles to convert their fleets to entirely zero-emission vehicles by 2040. This directive comes in the wake of the Governor signing a historical clean energy package that will help the State of Michigan achieve 100% clean energy by 2040, and 60% renewable energy by 2035. In acknowledging that more can be done outside of the energy sector, Governor Whitmer stated in her release, “lowering transportation-related greenhouse-gas emissions—which account for a third of total emissions—is essential.” Specifically, the directive will transition all light-duty vehicles to zero emissions by 2033 and all medium- and heavy-duty vehicles by 2040.
Michigan LCV strongly supports the transition of commercial and state-owned vehicles to electric vehicles and commends the Governor for her work to reduce our state’s carbon emissions.
