In preparation for the federal dollars Michigan is expected to receive under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (or the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal), Governor Whitmer issued an Executive Directive to departments to get a jump start on preparations that will allow Michigan to immediately start replacing our aging infrastructure as soon as federal funds become available.

Executive Directive 10 of 2021 includes actions such as prioritizing lead service line replacement for communities that have been disproportionately burdened by lead in their drinking water, incorporating climate change resiliency measures into infrastructure replacement projects along roadways, and ensuring that infrastructure projects use the “dig once” approach to save resources and complete multiple infrastructure upgrades (road, sewer, internet) at once.

Michigan LCV applauds Governor Whitmer’s efforts to ensure that no Michigan community has to wait for critical infrastructure upgrades that will improve drinking water quality, protect public health, and mitigate future flooding impacts; and, we look forward to continuing to work with her office to ensure the biggest possible investment in our water infrastructure in the coming months.
