AG Dana Nessel joined a multistate coalition of 21 attorneys general to file a motion to defend the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Oil and Gas Methane Rule. According to the EPA, the Oil and Gas Methane Rule exists to reduce methane emissions, limit and monitor leaks more effectively, and set procedures for states to follow to further limit their methane emissions from existing sources.

Before recent amendments, this rule only applied to new or modified oil and gas facilities and did not include existing facilities under its purview. This amended rule will further protect our environment and public health by strengthening regulations on all methane emissions. This will reduce air pollution and protect from an increase in the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, which trap heat in the atmosphere and exacerbate climate change.
