On July 17, 2019 Governor Whitmer doubled down on her commitment to appointing knowledgeable clean and efficient energy experts to the Michigan Public Service Commission. Phillips was the Director of the Cincinnati 2030 District – helping the city become an emerging leader in sustainability by reducing water and energy usage from buildings. Greater Cincinnati was recently recognized by Site Selection Magazine as the most sustainable metro area in the country for the second year in a row. Before his work in Cincinnati, Phillips started his career in environmental politics in Michigan, working at the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth as well as at the Michigan Environmental Council.
The three-member Michigan Public Service Commission is responsible for regulating public utilities, including electric power, telecommunications and natural gas services. With the appointment of Tremaine Phillips, as well as the recent appointment of Dan Scripps , Governor Whitmer positioned Michigan to prepare itself for the next generation of decision making at the MPSC.
