Polling shows concern for safety of Line 5 oil pipeline, strong support for Governor Whitmer’s handling of coronavirus
Lansing, MI – Today, League of Conservation Voters and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters are releasing results of recent polling that asked Michiganders about several major issues including the Line 5 oil pipeline and the state’s coronavirus pandemic response. Findings are based on the results of an online survey of likely 2022 voters conducted by ALG Research from January 28- February 3, 2020.
Key Findings:
- More than two-thirds (68%) had heard of Line 5 oil pipeline
- 62% believe Line 5 poses a threat to Michiganders (31% worry that Line 5 operating in the Great Lakes poses a major threat to Michiganders, another 31% worry it’s a minor threat)
- Whitmer coronavirus response job approval: 59%
- Whitmer’s favorability overall: 55%
In 2010, The Kalamazoo oil spill was the worst inland oil disaster in the country’s history. That pipeline was also operated by Enbridge and burst after the company claimed it was safe, leaving a legacy of poor safety standards and mis-trust from voters.
“Enbridge told us their pipeline was safe in 2010 and now they want us to trust them again,” said Bob Allison, deputy director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “The Line 5 oil pipeline is another ticking time bomb threatening the Great Lakes. Governor Whitmer put Michigan’s health and safety first by shutting down this 70 year old pipeline. It’s a risk we simply cannot afford.”
“Whether it’s coronavirus or threats from contaminated water, Michiganders have made it clear they want leaders who prioritize health and safety,” said Megan Jacobs, National Campaigns Director for League of Conservation Voters. “It’s clear that Michiganders recognize the serious threat that Line 5 poses and Governor Whitmer made the right decision in shutting it down. We thank Governor Whitmer for her leadership in protecting the great lakes and working to build a clean energy future.”
