“No Stricter Than Federal” Was Misguided, Deserves Repeal

MICHIGAN SHOULD BE ABLE TO PROTECT ITS RESIDENTS FROM POLLUTION, DRINKING WATER CONTAMINATION

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement regarding Senate Bill 14, which would reverse the so-called “No Stricter Than Federal” law (jammed through during 2018’s lame duck session).  The unnecessary and misguided law restricted the state Legislature from passing rules and regulations that were more stringent than federal standards.  Legislation to rightly repeal it was voted out of the Senate Energy and Environment Committee today.

“In many cases, the environmental challenges facing Michigan are unique to our state and we should be able to set best fit standards that protect our land, air, water and health,” said Nick Occhipinti, government affairs director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Under current state law we have tied our own hands; Senate Bill 14 frees Michigan again to be a leader in protecting our health, our children and our quality of life.”
