Three Things Thursday: June 1, 2023

Dear Michigan LCV Family, 

Welcome to the June 1, 2023 edition of Three Things Thursday! I’m at the Policy Conference so this week’s news is short and sweet.

1. The 2023 Mackinac Policy Conference

The Michigan LCV team has been omnipresent at the 2023 Detroit Regional Chamber’s Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.  In addition to 10 staff members, we have been joined by a number of our terrific board members: George Davis, Bob Sutherland, Kerry Duggan and Phil Roos. For those of you who have attended this event before, you know this is a true Pure Michigan gathering: beautiful island in the middle of some of the fastest moving (and most glorious) fresh water in the world, horses, fudge, tourists, bikes …and lots of people in suits, raising political money, building relationships and – in the best sense of things–working on solutions to the biggest problems facing the state of Michigan.

The past few days have been packed with individual meetings with lawmakers and leaders from other interest groups. I was honored to attend a breakfast reception at the Governor’s Residence on Tuesday morning and will attend another event with the Governor tonight.

In between the array of meetings and receptions, we were proud to host a Michigan LCV reception at the Seabiscuit Cafe, which was wildly successful.  We had more than a full house, with attendees spilling out onto the sidewalk.

This was definitely time well spent for the organization…and a reminder of why we do what we do every single day…..

2. Blog on SCOTUS

In an unfortunate turn of events, the U.S. The Supreme Court last week ruled against the authority of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the case of Sackett vs. EPA. 

This is an important case that Michigan LCV has been tracking for months because of its potential to set dangerous legal precedent for the future of environmental regulations. In the aftermath of last week’s ruling, our Federal Government Affairs team wrote a blog article about what the ruling means for the EPA’s authority, for the health of our waters and wetlands, and for Michigan.

3. New newsletter …tomorrow!

Finally, Michigan LCV is launching our brand new weekly newsletter, the Weekly Wave, tomorrow! 

As many of you know, Michigan LCV’s family of email has grown over recent years from just my own Three Things to include newsletters focused on our federal climate work with the Washington Weekly, legislative action in Lansing covered by the Capital Catch-Up, and updates on our voting rights and democracy work in the Democracy Drumbeat. With so many of Michigan LCV’s issues intersecting with one another, we decided to compile all of these newsletters into one, cohesive weekly update!

Moving forward, I will still be sending my Three Things as normal, but you can expect to see the Weekly Wave hit your inboxes every Friday morning if you are signed up for Michigan LCV’s email list, so be on the lookout!
