Statement from Michigan LCV on Sen. Peters call for Line 5 shutdown

LANSING – Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement responding to U.S. Senator Gary Peters’ call for the shutdown of Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 Pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac following recent damage to the pipeline from a ship’s anchor:

Line 5 imperils our Great Lakes, our economy and our way of life in Michigan and needs to be shut down without delay, and we applaud Sen. Gary Peters for joining thousands of Michiganders in demanding an immediate shutdown of the 64-year-old pipelines. Oil pipelines do not belong in our Great lakes, and each day oil is pumped through this aging, deteriorating pipeline is another day we risk a devastating oil spill. State leaders should follow Sen. Peters’ lead and call for an immediate shutdown of Line 5.”
