Parchment PFAS contamination crisis highlights urgent need for action

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today renewed their call on state lawmakers to return to Lansing from summer recess immediately and launch a full investigation into the growing PFAS crisis, which is threatening drinking water across Michigan. Michigan LCV renewed their call in light of last night’s news that Parchment residents’ drinking water contains 20 times the EPA advisory level for PFAS, sparking state officials to issue a warning to residents to refrain from drinking and using their tap water, giving it to their pets, watering their gardens and using it with infant formula.

“The horrific news in Parchment shows that this PFAS contamination spreading across our drinking water is a ballooning crisis, and should be a wake-up call for every state leader and all candidates running for office. We need bold action and leadership to protect the health of families,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of Michigan LCV. “Michigan must enact a tough, statewide drinking water standard immediately and develop a plan to address growing PFAS contamination across our state. We again call on state lawmakers to return to Lansing from summer recess now to address this crisis and conduct a full investigation into how a MDEQ PFAS report six years ago was ignored, kept from the public and swept under the rug.”
