Michigan LCV: Suppressed MDEQ report an affront to public health, highlights need for transparency

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (MLCV) issued the following statement following MLive’s uncovering of a suppressed Michigan DEQ report on PFAS contamination. The report withheld information about PFAS contamination for more than six years despite the known hazards to human health posed by these dangerous chemicals.

“The fact that this report was withheld from the public for six years is completely unacceptable and a clear failure of government,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “‘Forever chemicals’ like PFAS are a silent epidemic of major proportions in the Great Lakes state and have put countless families’ health at risk. State leaders should be held accountable for sweeping this public health crisis under the rug. This report should serve as a call to action for state lawmakers to demand transparency from the state agency charged with protecting our drinking water and protecting public health. ”

“The threat of PFAS contamination isn’t going away. We need a strong, enforceable drinking water standard based on current science. We cannot wait any longer. We need action now to protect Michigan communities from these dangerous chemicals,” continued Wozniak.
