LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement regarding the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s recent action granting Enbridge Energy permission to restore Line 5’s oil flow to maximum pressure. The pipeline was ordered to operate at a lower pressure in April, when a tugboat’s anchor struck the pipeline causing significant damage.
“Line 5 is clearly damaged and at risk of a rupture that would devastate our Great Lakes and completely upend our state’s tourism industry, which supports thousands of jobs and brings millions of dollars to our state each year,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Each day oil is pumped through Line 5 is another day we risk a disastrous oil spill in our Great Lakes. Attorney General Bill Schuette and Governor Rick Snyder should down Line 5 immediately.”
