LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement after the Michigan Legislature approved HB 5095, legislation that weakens Michigan’s ballast water standards to levels set by the U.S. Coast Guard, making the Great Lakes more vulnerable to aquatic invasive species. The bill will now go before the governor.

“This irresponsible legislation would weaken essential protections that prevent harmful invasive species, like zebra mussels, sea lamprey and Asian carp, from entering our Great Lakes,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “We are disappointed the Legislature approved weakening ballast water standards, and we urge Governor Snyder to stand up for our Great Lakes and veto this dangerous legislation.”
