Michigan LCV calls on state to hold Enbridge accountable for Line 5 violations

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today criticized Enbridge Energy for once again placing the Great Lakes at risk by withholding information from state regulators. A story published by the Detroit Free Press reported a metal rod that broke and was left in the Straits during work on the pipeline in November is five times longer than what Enbridge originally reported to the state.

“Misleading the state on the severity of a mechanical failure that left a 200 foot hunk of metal drifting near the 67-year-old Line 5 Pipeline is yet another example of how Enbridge Energy cannot be trusted,” said Bob Allison, deputy director of Michigan LCV. “We know there have been multiple safety violations for the pipeline in recent years, yet these incidents keep happening. Our Great Lakes are far too valuable to our state and our economy. Enbridge’s dangerous track-record speaks for itself and it’s time for the state to hold Enbridge accountable for these threats to our water.”
