Line 5 tunnel not an acceptable alternative

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement after Enbridge Energy released a report that proposes building a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac to replace the 65-year-old Line 5 Pipeline.

“Oil pipelines do not belong in the Great Lakes, and replacing the aging, dangerous Line 5 Pipeline with a tunnel will only continue to keep our Great Lakes at risk of a disastrous oil spill,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Clearly, Enbridge Energy has a vested interest in continuing to pump oil through the Straits, which explains why the company failed to adequately consider alternatives that keep oil pipelines out of our waters. The only way to truly prevent an oil spill in the Great Lakes is to shut down Line 5, and Attorney General Bill Schuette and Gov. Rick Snyder should do so immediately.”
