STATE BUDGET PROPOSAL WILL SUPPORT WATER AFFORDABILITY, INVEST IN CLEAN ENERGY, REMOVE LEAD PIPES, PUT MONEY BACK IN MICHIGANDERS’ POCKETS
The Michigan League of Conservation Voters released the following statement today regarding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2023-24 state budget proposal.
“As costs for many everyday essentials have gone up, Governor Whitmer’s budget puts money back in Michiganders’ pockets while investing in our communities, expanding clean energy and protecting our health,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “This budget sets Michigan on a pathway to finally make water affordable, lowers energy costs by taking important steps to improve the health, safety, and efficiency of our homes and businesses, and removes lead pipes to protect the health of our kids and future generations. We look forward to working with the Whitmer administration and Legislature to ensure this budget gets across the finish line and that we grow these investments to maximize Michigan’s share of federal funding.”
Highlights of the budget include:
- $280.5 million for water infrastructure upgrades and repairs
- $225.8 million for lead service line replacement
- $100 million for environmental justice, $50 million of which would go toward reducing environmental health burdens within communities located close to sources of pollution
- $43 million for grid resilience
- $41.5 million for renewable-ready community program
- $150 million in matching grants for electric school buses
- $100 million for weatherization and home repairs
