MPSC Slashes DTE’s Rate Increase Request
Late last week, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved a $30.5 million rate increase for DTE Energy – just a small fraction of the $388 million the utility company originally requested. The MPSC’s decision comes after DTE said it needed to “recover increased investments” in its grid in order to provide and improve quality utility service for customers.
Customers are expected to see a 0.78% percent increase to monthly bills instead of a much higher figure.
According to the MPSC, this increase is needed for the utility to provide and improve electrical service, a finding that contradicts DTE’s usage projections that claimed falling residential energy use with people returning to the office following the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, energy use in Michigan homes increased over the past two years.
Also, importantly, during this rate case, the MPSC held a field hearing for the first time in the city of Detroit for a rate case. Hundreds of people came out and the commissioners heard hours of impassioned testimony from DTE customers raising concerns about already high energy costs, poor service and power shut offs during the pandemic. Get Involved! DTE 5 Year Energy Planning Begins; Virtual Public Hearing Announced
After DTE Energy released its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), outlining the utility’s energy plans for the next five years, Michiganders will have a chance to provide input. On December 12 from 4 – 7 pm, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) will hold a virtual hearing to hear from Michiganders about DTE’s IRP. Those interested can use this link to participate.
