Michigan’s pathway to carbon neutrality

We know the impacts climate change is having on our communities, from historic flooding to record high lake levels and toxic algae. Climate change is not tomorrow’s problem. It’s here now.

And we know that our water infrastructure is outdated, and many communities are still grappling with toxic contamination and lack of access to clean, safe and affordable drinking water.

It’s time for bold action to make Michigan a leader on protecting our water and taking action on climate change.

On April 21, Governor Whitmer announced the final MI Healthy Climate Plan, Michigan’s boldest climate action plan in history.

The plan will chart Michigan on a course to do its part to address the climate crisis and protect our Great Lakes and health for future generations.

Some of the highlights of the plan include:

  • Achieving 100% carbon neutrality by 2050
  • Retire all coal plants by 2030
  • Establishing a 50% Renewable Portfolio Standard by 2030
  • Building out electric vehicle charging infrastructure necessary to support 2 million EVs (light duty, heavy duty, and public transportation) by 2030
  • Adopting a 2% energy waste reduction standard for electric utilities and a 1% standard for gas utilities
  • The comprehensive MI Healthy Climate Plan will guide the state in boosting renewable energy use and energy efficiency as
  • Michigan grows its clean energy economy.

Thank Governor Whitmer for introducing the MI Healthy Climate Plan and putting us on a path to a cleaner, greener Michigan!

We know the impacts climate change is having on our communities, from historic flooding to record high lake levels and toxic algae. Climate change is not tomorrow’s problem. It’s here now.

This plan will make Michigan a leader on protecting our water and taking action on climate change.

In September 2020, Governor Whitmer established the Michigan Council on Climate Solutions, an advisory body made up of 14 Michiganders, to advise the Governor’s office and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) on the implementation of climate and energy solutions to tackle the climate crisis.

On January 14, EGLE released the draft MI Healthy Climate Plan. Over the past three months, thousands of people have weighed in to strengthen the plan and ensure it meets the moment and takes bold action on climate change. The resulting plan will be Michigan’s number one tool that will drive our state’s transition toward clean, affordable energy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
