Michigan LCV voices support for AG Nessel’s lawsuit to shut down Line 5
LANSING — The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement in support of Attorney General Dana Nessel’s legal efforts to shut down the Line 5 Pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac. Oral arguments for the case Nessel v Enbridge Energy were heard today by the Hon. James Jamo of the Ingham County 30th Circuit Court.
“The damaged Line 5 Pipeline is the single-greatest threat to our Great Lakes, risking an oil spill that would impact more than 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. It is a ticking time bomb in the heart of our Great Lakes,” said Bentley Johnson, Federal Government Affairs Director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Enbridge Energy, the same company responsible for the largest inland oil spill in U.S. history in the Kalamazoo River, cannot be trusted to safely maintain this pipeline. Line 5 is a Canadian pipeline that makes Canadian profits and delivers fuel mostly to Canadians. Keeping Line 5 open serves Canada’s interests, not the interests of Michiganders. We stand with Attorney General Nessel to protect our Great Lakes, drinking water and economy by shutting down Line 5.”
