Michigan LCV to Legislature: Don’t ram through risky Line 5 tunnel proposal in Lame Duck

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today urged lawmakers to reject ill-conceived and risky legislation that would allow a tunnel to replace the Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac as lawmakers begin the Lame Duck Session. Sen. Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba) introduced legislation Thursday that would establish the Mackinac Bridge Authority’s ability to oversee a tunnel under the Straits. Michigan LCV has launched an effort to oppose 11th hour attempt to jam through legislation continuing Line 5.

“Building a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac would allow oil to pump through the dangerous Line 5 pipeline for another 10 years, keeping our Great Lakes at risk of a disastrous oil spill with catastrophic consequences,” said Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director at Michigan LCV. “Last Tuesday, the voters of Michigan sent a clear message: they want lawmakers to shut down Line 5 and make protecting our Great Lakes and drinking water a top priority, so we urge elected officials to reject special interests who want to perpetuate a risky underground tunnel that imperils our Great Lakes.”
