Michigan LCV stands with those fighting to preserve our democracy
Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement in response to the violence at the United States Capitol building:
Over the last several months, we’ve seen outrageous threats to our democracy, starting in Michigan with armed protesters entering our state Capitol and kidnapping plots targeting our Governor, and now at the United States Capitol with an angry mob storming “the people’s building”, inciting violence, causing great destruction and resulting in the loss of human life. It is up to all of us –individuals, organizations and businesses — to reject these acts of vitriol and hate by speaking out against it. We stand with those who are pulling funding and halting campaign contributions to elected officials who foment this kind of dangerous division. We support elected officials from both parties who are coming together and declaring that enough is enough. We denounce, in the harshest terms, the pitting of Americans against each other and the rise of militias and white supremecists who have been egged on by our sitting President and turned loose on our state and federal governments and Americans of color.
May this moment serve as a flashpoint in our history books; the moment we faced standing together, coalesced around one goal: protecting our democracy. As we face these challenges in an increasingly polarized nation, it is time to come together to fight for what unifies us.
“After watching a mob storm the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to deny a free and fair election and, in turn, upend our democracy, Michigan League of Conservation Voters is more committed than ever to ensuring Michiganders have the tools to make their voices heard, including access to the ballot,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director at Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “We will continue to fight this attack on our democracy by strengthening voting rights and supporting elected officials who work to address the injustices and inequities that currently plague our nation.”
