Michigan LCV renews opposition to ‘no stricter than federal’ bill

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today renewed its opposition to House Bill 4205, legislation that would bar state agencies from adopting environmental protections more stringent than federal rules.

“Lawmakers in the Senate continue to jam through irresponsible and dangerous proposals that threaten the health of Michiganders and leave our drinking water and Great Lakes vulnerable to pollution,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of Michigan LCV. “House Bill 4205 would handcuff state agencies, preventing them from adopting policies that ensure we have safe drinking water and clean air. Worse yet, it would put the health of our communities in the hands of an EPA that is dead-set on dismantling standards and rules that protect our air, land and water.”

“For communities in Michigan grappling with PFAS-contaminated drinking water, this is truly a dangerous piece of legislation. Toxic PFAS chemicals are not federally regulated and, if passed, HB 4205 would make it more difficult for Michigan to enact drinking water rules to protect the 1.9 million Michiganders now impacted by this dangerous ‘forever chemical,'” Wozniak added.
