Michigan LCV renews call against Line 5 tunnel during Mackinac Bridge Authority meeting
LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today issued the following statement ahead of a Mackinac Bridge Authority public meeting regarding the deal struck between Enbridge Energy and Gov. Rick Snyder to replace the 65-year-old Line 5 Pipeline with an oil tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac.
“The Snyder-Enbridge oil tunnel is a false ‘solution’ that does nothing to eliminate the threat posed by Line 5,” saidLisa Wozniak, Executive Director at Michigan LCV. “Snyder’s backroom deal with Enbridge is simply a tactic to allow special interests to keep pumping oil through a damaged oil pipeline as long as possible, despite the well-documented risk Line 5 poses to our Great Lakes. The only way to truly prevent an oil spill in our Great Lakes is to shut down Line 5 and cease the flow of oil under the Straits of Mackinac once and for all.”
