Key Information
House Bills 4567, 4568, and 4569 modernize Michigan’s commercial fishing regulations. The bills create a specific list of the fish species available for commercial harvest; require commercial fishers to check their nets regularly for unintended ‘bycatch’, and regulate the allowable gear in relation to the time of year and location of nets. It would also establish increased penalties for the taking, possessing or selling of specific species. The bills require the MDNR to conduct a study at least every three years to determine the allowable bycatch and adjust quotas accordingly and require commercial fishers to report GPS coordinates of their cast nets to the MDNR. The bills align Michigan specifically with Consent Decree goals related to lake trout including the restoration of self-sustaining, wild populations.
