Justice Dorothy Comstock Riley

Justice Dorothy Comstock Riley was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1982 by Gov. William Milliken after having lost election to the Court that same year. She was removed in 1983 and then elected back to the Court in 1984. She served as Chief Justice from 1987 – 1991, and was re-elected in 1992. She retired in 1997. 

Justice Clifford Taylor

Justice Clifford Taylor was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1997 by Gov. John Engler (R). He was elected to the Court in 2000 and served as Chief Justice from 2005-2008. His term expired in 2008, and he was not re-elected.

Justice Robert Griffin

Justice Robert Griffin was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1986. He retired at the end of his term in 1994.

Justice Mary Coleman

Justice Mary Coleman was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1972. She was re-elected in 1980 and resigned in 1982.

Justice Maura Corrigan

Justice Maura Corrigan was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1998 and re-elected 2006. She served as Chief Justice from 2001-2004. Though her term was to expire in 2015, she left the Court in 2011 and was appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder (R) to head the Department of Human Services.

Justice Thomas G. Kavanagh

Justice Thomas G. Kavanaugh was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1968. He was re-elected in 1976, and his term ended in 1984. Justice Kavanaugh served as Chief Justice from 1975 – 1979.

Justice John Fitzgerald

Justice John Fitzgerald was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1974 by Gov. William G. Milliken (R). He was elected to the Court in 1974 and retired at the end of his term in 1982.

Justice Alton Thomas Davis

Justice Alton Thomas Davis was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) in 2010 to fill a vacant term which expired Jan 1, 2011. He ran but did not win election to the Court in November 2010.

Justice James Ryan

Justice James Ryan was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1975 by Gov. William Milliken (R). He was elected to the Court in 1976 and re-elected in 1978. He resigned in 1985 after appointment to the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Justice Marilyn Kelly

Justice Marilyn Kelly was first elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in 1996. She was re-elected in 2004 and served as Chief Justice from 2008-2011. He term expires in 2013, and she is age-barred from seeking re-election in 2012.
