Juneteenth – a federal holiday observed each year on June 19 – is a celebration of June 19, 1865, the day slavery was abolished in Texas, and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

In celebration of Juneteenth, there are a wide range of events and opportunities to commemorate this important day happening all over Michigan. Find one in your area and celebrate Juneteenth with Michigan LCV!

Grand Rapids

Justice 4 All’s Juneteenth Jam

Join Justice 4 All from 4-8 p.m. on June 19 in Grand Rapids for the fourth annual Juneteenth Jam! Enjoy live performances by local musicians and DJs, games for children, art showcases, and Black-owned food vendors in celebration of the Juneteenth holiday! 

Kalamazoo

Juneteenth Community Day

Join the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts on June 15 from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for a day of exploration, celebration, and more in celebration of Juneteenth. This day-long event will include art activities, readings, film screenings, and more! 

Detroit

Juneteenth on the Cut

Celebrate Juneteenth on the Dequindre Cut on June 19 from 2-7 p.m. with live music, vendors, food trucks, and more! Located on the eastern border of historic Black Bottom, the Dequindre Cut’s Juneteenth celebration will celebrate the legacy of Black Bottom with storytelling, performances, and interactive opportunities for all ages. 

BlkBok’s Juneteenth 

Join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on June 19 at 7 p.m. for an evening of music by BLKBOK, neo-classical piano renegade, culture innovator, and Detroit native.

Madison Heights

2024 Madison Heights Juneteenth Celebration

Join Visit Detroit in celebrate of freedom at one of Metro Detroit’s premier Juneteenth Celebrations on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Madison Heights Civic Center Park. Enjoy live music, food trucks, vendors, educational exhibits, a climbing tower, a petting zoo, pony rides, children’s activities, crafts and more! 

Southfield

Celebrating Juneteenth Open Mic

Enjoy poetry from Metro Detroit’s best spoken word poets on June 22 from 1-4 p.m. on the lawn of the Southfield Public Library in celebration of Juneteenth! Showcase your talent or enjoy and applaud the creative performances of others. Original spoken word done solo, in duets or trios and more, are welcome and encouraged. Pre-registration is required to perform. 

Royal Oak

4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Royal Oak

Celebrate Juneteenth at the Centennial Commons in Royal Oak on June 19 from 3-8 p.m. The celebration will include a Freedom Walk to honor this historic occasion, along with an array of family-friendly activities, groove to soulful music, games, witness captivating performances, food trucks offering delicious cuisines and delectable treats, explore the offerings of local vendors, giveaways, and much more! 

Canton

Juneteenth Celebration in Canton

Celebrate Juneteenth in Canton on June 15 from 3-10 p.m. The celebration will include remarks from guest speakers and awardees, and feature Black-owned businesses, entertainment, activities and more. 

Ypsilanti

Ypsilanti Juneteenth Celebration

Celebrate Juneteenth June 21-23 at the 4th Annual Ypsilanti Juneteenth Celebration! This multi-day celebration will include local vendors and community organizations, live performances, special giveaways, and a weekend of bringing the Ypsilanti community together. 

Ann Arbor 

University of Michigan Juneteenth Symposium

Celebrate Juneteenth June 20-21 in ann Arbor at the fifth annual Juneteenth Symposium held at the Michigan League in Ann Arbor. Attend two dynamic, thought-provoking days of visual art, performances, conversation and celebration of the Juneteenth holiday. 

Lansing

2024 Lansing Juneteenth Celebration

Celebrate Juneteenth in Lansing June 8-15 at the 2024 Lansing Juneteenth Celebration! This multi-day event will include an annual kickball game, awards, a Freedom Festival, 5k walk/run, parades, resources fairs, and more! 

Michigan State University Juneteenth Commemorative Celebration

Attend the 4th annual MSU Juneteenth Commemorative Celebration onJune 14 from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Breslin Center. The commemoration features the multi-faceted musician and host Rodney Page, gospel music by Gregory D and Company, jazz music by the MSU College of Music, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Phoenix Miranda and more. 

Traverse City

Juneteenth in Traverse City

Celebrate Juneteenth in Traverse City on June 19 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Dennos Museum Center! The event will feature Detroit-based artist Louise Jones, film screenings, activities, and more! 

Dearborn

Nature Walks for Mental Health

On Wednesday, June 19 from 1:30 – 2:15 p.m., join the Environmental Interpretive Center naturalists for a guided nature walk as they point out any interesting wildlife and natural phenomena encountered along the way. A mental health and Wellness Peer Educator from Counseling and Psychological Services will share brief guided meditations. Each walk you attend enters you into a PRIZE RAFFLE on our final meeting.
