Clean Energy Future Plan propels Michigan forward in climate fight

Senate Bills move Michigan to 100% clean energy by 2040, boost rooftop solar, energy efficiency, invest in low-income communities

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters issued the following statement in support of the Michigan Clean Energy Future Plan, a package of bills approved by the Senate today that would transition Michigan to 100% clean energy, boost energy efficiency investments in communities across the state, and require the Michigan Public Service Commission to consider impacts to public health when regulating utility companies. 

“This package represents important and significant progress and makes Michigan a regional partner in the fight to address climate change in the Midwest,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “In the face of razor-thin margins and deep-pocketed lobbying by DTE and Consumers, Senate Democrats passed bills that focus on kitchen-table issues that Michiganders have been demanding action on:  like creating good-paying jobs, especially in communities most impacted by the climate crisis, and lowering energy bills through improved weatherization programs.”

“We look forward to swift action in the House on this important legislation so Michigan can capitalize on federal funds available through the Inflation Reduction Act, and seize the moment for broad clean energy progress.”

Senate Bills 271, 273 and 502 create a 100% clean electricity standard, expand access to energy efficiency programs and empower the Michigan Public Service Commission to regulate big energy utility companies on a broader array of issues impacting residents.
