Dedicated to the commitment to racial justice and equity in the
Michigan conservation movement
Mark Stranahan lived an amazing life that touched countless people throughout his beloved state of Michigan and far beyond. Whether through his incredible eye for design and advocacy for sustainable, green architecture, his creative pursuits in writing, music, and photography, or his deep passion for the outdoors and adventure, Mark saw beauty in the world and created it for others to enjoy. Because of his lifelong commitment to the celebration and protection of the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land upon which we grow our food, Mark became an enthusiastic and longtime board member of Michigan LCV. A passionate advocate for racial justice and equity, Mark was enormously supportive of Michigan LCV’s work to address the environmental injustices that plague our state. To honor Mark’s life, his passion and his commitment, we have joined with the Stranahan family to establish a memorial fund in his name.
Donations to this work will be dedicated to our focus on climate and water justice. Michigan LCV believes deeply that our core issues — from climate change and water affordability to voting rights and voter registration/accessibility — all have a disproportionate effect on low-income and minority populations, and combating these inequities is critical to our mission and our impact on society. It is our hope that this fund will be a way for friends and loved ones — all those whose lives Mark touched and who share his dedication to creating a more just world– to make a true impact in communities all across Michigan, keeping Mark’s legacy alive for years to come.
Our 2021 work includes:
- Work with the state legislature, governor’s administration, and members of the Michigan congressional delegation to address critical issues of water affordability and accessibility, including ending inhumane water shutoffs in response to unpaid water bills and instituting water protection laws such as the lead and copper rule and legislation to reduce PFAS contamination in our water.
- Work with the state legislature, governor’s administration, members of the Michigan congressional delegation, and the Biden administration to address the climate crisis that disproportionately impacts underserved communities and communities of color throughout Michigan.
- Hold elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels accountable for promises they make to constituents regarding water affordability and accessibility and climate issues.
