Gov. Whitmer’s MI Healthy Climate Plan is state roadmap to tackling climate change
FINAL PLAN CALLS FOR NEEDED INVESTMENTS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY, JOB CREATION, AND PROTECT OUR FUTURE BY CLEANING UP OUR AIR AND DRINKING WATER
LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement after the release of the MI Healthy Climate Plan, Michigan’s boldest climate action agenda in history that lays a framework for investing in clean energy, closing coal plants and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
“This MI Healthy Climate Plan makes Michigan a major proof-point that our state is committed to addressing the climate crisis by rapidly investing in clean, renewable energy to reduce pollution and ensure a healthy future for our children and grandkids,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “The clock is ticking on climate, yet not every state has the type of leadership willing to address it. Gov. Whitmer is bringing together business leaders, bipartisan lawmakers and environmental advocates to put our state on a bold pathway to achieving climate action, creating good-paying jobs, and improving the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink.”
Michigan LCV noted key recommendations for investments in clean energy to provide cleaner air and water across the state including:
- Generating 60% of the state’s electricity from clean energy, including establishing a 50% Renewable energy standard by 2030; Retiring all coal plants by 2030
- Building out electric vehicle charging infrastructure necessary to support 2 million EVs by 2030
- Adopting a 2% energy waste reduction target for electric utilities and a 1.5% standard for gas utilities
