“Broken Bottle Bill” a net loss for environment

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today issued the following statement after House Bill 5423, which they are calling the “ Broken Bottle Bill,” passed out of the House Ways and Means Committee.

“At a time when we have more reported contamination issues than ever before, House Bill 5423 will result in a net loss for funding that goes directly to cleanup of contaminated sites that threaten the health of our communities,” said Nick Occhipinti, government affairs director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “The majority of contaminated sites in Michigan do not have an entity that can be held responsible for cleanup. Lawmakers who are pushing for stronger accountability for polluters shouldn’t support the stripping of funding that goes to contaminated sites. If these elected officials are serious about cleaning up toxic contamination and protecting the health of Michiganders, they can’t compromise on funding for cleanup of these sites.”
