Line 5 Tunnel Deal Leaves Oil Flowing, Fails To Protect Our Lakes

LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (Michigan LCV) today issued the following statement after the state House approved SB 1197, legislation that would create a new government authority to oversee a proposed tunnel to replace Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac. The bill will now go to the Senate for approval and then the Governor’s desk for his final signature or veto.

“This irresponsible and dangerous proposal was jammed through the Legislature at the 11th hour and imperils our water by keeping oil pumping through the damaged Line 5 Pipeline for another decade or more,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of Michigan LCV. “The backroom deal between Enbridge and the state demonstrates Governor Snyder’s failure to stand up to special interests and corporate polluters to protect our treasured Great Lakes.”
