Michigan LCV Statement on Enbridge Suspending Line 5 Operations

LANSING – Today, Michigan LCV responded to news that Senator Gary Peters worked with Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to force Enbridge to suspend Line 5 operations during today’s severe weather.

Enbridge has continued to show it can’t be trusted and today’s inaction is just the latest example of why all Michiganders should be outraged and concerned,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Governor Rick Snyder has resisted our repeated calls to shut down Line 5, ignored his own task force who’s demanded the same, and now Enbridge has violated a signed agreement with the state to shut down Line 5 during adverse weather. Attorney General Bill Schuette also has the power to step in and shut down Line 5, but seems content to trust Enbridge and do nothing.”

Protecting our Great Lakes from a disastrous oil spill should not be a partisan issue. We call on state leaders and anyone running for elected office to stand up for our Great Lakes and join the growing number of Republicans and Democrats calling for the immediate shutdown of Line 5,” added Wozniak.
