Rollback of clean cars standards a step backward for Michigan
LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters today responded to reports that the Trump Administration plans to roll back the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which require automakers to make vehicles more fuel efficient, saving drivers money at the pump and safeguarding air quality:
Rolling back these standards means more dangerous pollution will be pumped into the air Michigan families breathe every day,” said Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Michigan can remain the car capital of the world while still protecting public health and reducing carbon emissions, and the answer lies in encouraging cleaner, more efficient cars.”
At an event at Willow Run last March, President Trump announced in a speech he would reopen the fuel efficiency standards for review. According to media reports, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt plans to announce a rollback of the standards this week.
We have the ability — right here in Michigan — to meet strong fuel economy targets that save drivers money, provide a range of vehicle options, create jobs and spur innovation in advanced vehicle technology that will strengthen the long-term health and economy of our state,” Wozniak added.
