Tell Gov. Whitmer and EGLE: Deny Enbridge’s Line 5 tunnel permit

The Great Lakes are Michigan’s crown jewel, holding 21% of Earth’s fresh surface water and serving as a vital resource for drinking water, recreation, tourism, and economic livelihoods across our state. This delicate ecosystem, however, faces an alarming threat: Canadian oil company Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline running through the Straits of Mackinac – one of the most ecologically sensitive areas in the world.

Despite Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s 2020 order to decommission the 72-year-old pipeline, Enbridge is pressing forward with plans to build a tunnel beneath the Straits to house the structure – a project that would prolong our dependence on fossil fuels, endanger our Great Lakes, and risk significant farm to Michigan communities.

Now, with new administrations taking over in Washington, D.C., and Canada, the stakes in the fight to shut down Line 5 are higher than ever, but Michigan has an opportunity to act decisively to deny Enbridge’s tunnel permit and stop the misguided tunnel project in its tracks.

Governor Whitmer and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) Phil Roos have the power to reject the permit, stop the tunnel, and protect our Great Lakes while prioritizing clean energy solutions and a sustainable future. Join us in urging our leaders to deny this Enbridge’s dangerous, misguided tunnel permit.
