And we’ll show you two ways to help. Together, we can be a voice for change and protect Michigan’s land, air, water, public health, and democracy.
In uncertain times, protecting our drinking water and communities from toxic chemicals like PFAS has never been more important. As Donald Trump prepares to take office, he has pledged to severely limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to hold true to its namesake: protecting our environment.
Just last year, for the first time in history, the EPA established national drinking water protections for toxic PFAS chemicals. This was a monumental step forward, safeguarding the health of millions of people across the country.
But with Donald Trump taking office in January, the EPA’s ability to enforce these protections is at risk. Trump has vowed to weaken the EPA’s power, leaving major questions about whether the federal government will continue holding polluters accountable and ensuring our water remains safe from toxic chemicals like PFAS. This would be disastrous, leaving states like Michigan to fend for themselves.
Fortunately, Michigan has been a national leader on this issue. Under Governor Whitmer’s leadership, our state implemented its own PFAS drinking water standards in 2020. However, these protections are under attack. The major polluter 3M has sued Michigan over these standards, and now the fate of Michigan’s PFAS protections hangs in the balance before the Michigan Supreme Court.
Now more than ever, we need Governor Whitmer to take action to defend Michigan’s protections from PFAS contamination. With the EPA’s role under threat and the fate of our state’s protections hanging in the balance, Michiganders cannot afford to take a step backward in the fight for clean, safe drinking water.
