And we’ll show you two ways to help. Together, we can be a voice for change and protect Michigan’s land, air, water, public health, and democracy.
Building codes are important for making sure our homes and businesses are safe and efficient, which helps us save money on our monthly energy bills. The problem in Michigan? Our current codes are in serious need of an update.
Michigan’s building codes are supposed to be updated every six years, but ours haven’t gotten any attention since 2016. In addition to being out of compliance, we are missing out on important energy efficiency upgrades that could save us money on our monthly energy bills while also reducing our energy usage, which means less pollution in our air and water.
According to the Department of Energy, if we update our building codes to the International Energy Conservation Code, which is the standard currently used around the world, Michiganders would save $325 a year on energy costs.
Thanks to big energy utility companies who continue to raise our rates, Michigan residents pay some of the highest energy costs in the Midwest. These building code updates would move forward energy efficiency upgrades that homes and businesses across the state need.
Lawmakers in Lansing have the power to adopt these new codes and move us forward, but they only have a few more weeks before the legislative session ends.
Send leaders in Lansing a message now to help us save money on our energy costs.
