Michigan LCV Celebrates 25 Years of People-Centered Power
Michigan LCV is celebrating a significant milestone: 25 years of dedicated advocacy for the environment and people of the Great Lakes State!
As we commemorate our 25th anniversary this month, let’s take a moment to reflect on Michigan LCV’s journey over the last quarter century and how we have grown into the organization that puts people-power first and champions the protection of our air, land, water, health, and democracy that we are today.
Michigan LCV was founded in 1999 with the mission to educate and advocate for the protection of Michigan’s air, land, and water, and fight for a more sustainable and just Michigan. Starting with just two people in a small office, the organization aimed to protect the state’s natural resources through grassroots activism and political advocacy.
From its humble beginnings, Michigan LCV has grown into an influential force with more than 30 staff members and offices statewide. This growth has enabled our family of organizations – including the Michigan LCV Education Fund and Michigan LCV PAC – to expand its reach and deepen its impact, continuously evolving to meet new environmental challenges.
But our growth has not been without its challenges – especially in a state like Michigan. Over our first quarter century of work, Michigan LCV has been up against virtually constant political roadblocks from powerful corporate special interests and big polluters.

But – as Michigan LCV always does – we have persevered to overcome the obstacles in front of us.
Over the years, Michigan LCV has reached numerous milestones, from successful campaigns to pass environmental legislation to crucial victories in court that have protected our natural resources, highlighting our constant commitment to impactful, lasting change.
As our team and influence have grown over the years, Michigan LCV has increasingly played a pivotal role in shaping state, local, and even federal environmental policies – and when we secured a pro-environment, trifecta majority in Michigan during the 2022 election, we capitalized by helping pass historic clean energy legislation, creating a new future for the Great Lakes State.
Through persistent advocacy over 25 years, we have successfully influenced key legislative changes that have strengthened protections for Michigan’s natural resources, safeguarded an accessible democracy, held polluters accountable, and created pathways toward a more sustainable climate future.
As Michigan LCV has become a leader in the Michigan environmental movement, our team’s collaborative efforts with other environmental groups across the state and the country have amplified our impact, creating a united front for stronger environmental policies and actions.
We are proud that Michigan LCV is now looked to as a shining example of success in advocacy and lobbying, effectively engaging in the political process and ensuring lawmakers prioritize environmental priorities.
Our persistence and dedication have resulted in a track record of electing pro-environment and pro-democracy champions to office in Michigan, and we are always holding them accountable. We have shown without a doubt that Michigan LCV wins.
As we celebrate 25 years of advocacy and progress, Michigan LCV is committed to making our next 25 years even more successful for Michigan’s environment, Michigan communities and families, and future generations of Michiganders.
While the path ahead will have its challenges, Michigan LCV is prepared to lead Michigan in the fight for a sustainable future and the protection of our air, land, water, climate, health, and democracy.
