Congressman Vern Ehlers, who has represented Michigan’s Third District for the last sixteen years, announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of his current term. We at Michigan LCV are particularly sad to see him step down. Michigan is where Congressman Ehlers began his legislative career and built his reputation as an advocate of environmental protection for future generations.

Update: Federal government fails to take decisive action on Asian Carp issue; local meetings held to discuss carp control

At Monday's federal “Carp Summit”, White House officials released a 25-step plan to prevent the migration of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, the plan does not include permanent closure of the locks in the Chicago shipping canal. Governor Jennifer Granholm expressed disappointment in the federal administration’s refusal to immediately shut down the locks; Granholm and a coalition of Great Lakes Governors were advocating for permanent closure of the locks.

Update: Government agencies and elected officials take action to address Asian Carp invasion

On Monday, February 8, Governor Granholm, along with Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, will meet with Obama administration officials to discuss a strategy for protecting the Great Lakes from the invasive Asian Carp. The Governors will meet with Nancy Sutley of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, Army Corps of Engineers, Department of the Interior, and U.S. Coast Guard.
