Background:  Michigan League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is a dynamic non-profit, non-partisan political organization working with its members and the state’s conservation and environmental community to make environmental protection a top priority with elected officials and the voting public. Michigan LCV helps elect candidates to public office who stand up for conservation principles, and holds elected officials accountable for their actions.   The affiliated Michigan LCV Education Fund shares staff and office space with Michigan LCV, and is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, non-partisan organization that builds the muscle of the conservation community through technical support, training and coalition building.  Michigan LCV Education Fund also supports programs to increase voting and citizen participation in Michigan’s democratic process.  Michigan LCV’s home office is in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Political Director works for both organizations and is ideally based in Michigan LCV’s Ann Arbor office.  The position is responsible to and supervised by the Executive Director.

Necessary Qualifications:  The Political Director must have excellent written, verbal and electronic communications skills, and extensive campaign experience--ideally both electoral and issue-focused.  S/he must have excellent “people skills”, be detailed oriented with good organization skills and meticulous follow-through. In addition, s/he must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team, and have familiarity with various computer software programs (Word, Illustrator, Excel, databases).  S/he must be willing to travel throughout the state, should have a deep understanding of environmental issues and Michigan politics, and be committed to the mission and purpose of Michigan LCV and Michigan LCV Education Fund.

Duties and Responsibilities: At one time or anotherthroughout a two year election cycle, the Political Director has the following duties and responsibilities:

Political Coordination

  • Development and implementation of cutting edge issue-based and electoral campaign plans.  This involves working closely with Michigan LCV’s highly qualified staff, overseeing implementation as related to member communication, field organizing, media, and legislative communication.
  • Coordination of electoral campaigns and issue-advocacy campaigns across the state.  This includes collaboration with allied organizations in coalitions, and development of relationships with non-traditional allies around key environmental issues facing the state.
  • Staff management of both the Issues and Accountability and the Political Committees of the Board.

Legislative and Administrative Advocacy

  • Working closely with other Michigan LCV staff and the Board on the development and implementation of a pro-active environmental policy agenda. This includes representing Michigan LCV at the Capitol during legislative session and legislative workgroups, and before administrative agencies; drafting legislation; analyzing proposed policies and legislation internally and in coalition; strategizing on appropriate priorities and campaigns with the environmental community; and building relationships with legislators, legislative staff, and key individuals within administrative agencies and the executive branch.
  • Development of a Common Agenda with the Michigan environmental community’s legislative staff persons and opinion leaders.  This includes content management of the Michigan Environmental Briefing Book project and communication with media and the public on the top environmental and conservation issues facing Michigan.
  • Management of the Michigan LCV Environmental Scorecard, Michigan LCV’s trademark publication and accountability tool, which grades lawmakers on their environmental voting records.

Public Education

  • Collaboration with Michigan LCV’s communication staff to deliver timely, strategic, and consistent messages to the media, decision-makers, Michigan LCV members and key segments of the general public.  This includes, but is not limited to, drafting press releases and opinion editorials, organizing and participating in Editorial Board meetings, outreach to members via action alerts and weekly website updates, and pro-active communication with decision makers, i.e., floor letters.

General

  • Performing the administrative tasks necessary to accomplish his or her job, including timely completion of administrative paperwork; participating in and assisting with trainings for staff, member leaders, and other members for their leadership development; and attending staff, Board, and annual meetings, and other meetings and events as assigned.
