We’re watching this and other races take shape in what will be a critical year in Michigan’s elections. Stay tuned at michiganlcv.org for the latest news on which candidates get in which races and who will be the best (and worst) lawmakers for our Great Lakes and clean energy future.

Potential candidates and House Bill 5207
Michigan House Bill 5207 is the best test of conservation credentials available in recent times for current representatives, senators, and the governor. (More information is available at www://richardbrewer.org.) Most members of both parties voted for the bill despite a grass-roots campaign waged from August 2009 to early January 2010 by hundreds of Kalamazoo area conservationists, environmentalists, and ordinary citizens concerned with the loss of dedicated open space. The governor signed it into law without comment on 5 Jan.
Based on votes for HB 5207, disqualified candidates for the governor nomination would be State Rep Alma Wheeler Smith and State Sen Hansen Clarke. Also disqualified would be House Speaker Andy Dillon, suggested elsewhere as a candidate for governor. We will not know how John Cherry should be regarded, but in the Senate, his sister Deb voted for the anti-conservation, anti-environment, anti-sustainability HB 5207.
