Smoking Ban - Better late than never!

Michigan's legislature finally took action to protect public health last week, passing a bill that would ban smoking in most public places. The District of Columbia and 37 other states have already passed such bans, some that are more restrictive than Michigan's. But still, it's an important step for the state.

Second hand smoke has long been known to cause long term lung disease. The smoking ban will protect restaurant and bar employees and customers from these harmful health effects.

Such a ban was discussed last year as well, only to be tabled when the state House and Senate couldn't agree on which establishments would be covered under the law. The bill passed last week would exempt casinos and cigar bars.

Jennifer Granholm is expected to sign the bill soon, putting the ban into effect in May. The Senate voted in favor of the ban 24 to 13, and the House passed it 75 to 30. See if your legislator voted to protect public health - click here.
